The Artemis Wellness Project
When you are a dancer or a performer, it isn’t just a hobby, it’s who you are. But when chronic illness, disability, or severe health changes step in, the high-energy physical demands of the performing arts can suddenly become impossible. For many living with conditions like ME, mental illness, or chronic pain, the devastating reality is having to walk away from the studio, the stage, and the community they love.
The Artemis Wellness Project (TAWP) was born out of that exact heartbreak. Founded by a dancer whose own journey was redirected by ME, TAWP was created to bridge the painful gap between having to give up the intense physical practice of your passion and still desperately wanting to remain connected to it.
Who we are
We are an independent, remote-first social enterprise based in the UK, dedicated to creating spaces for those who have had to step away. We understand the grief of losing your creative outlet, and we exist to remind you that your artistic identity didn't vanish just because your ability changed. We provide a gentle, low-demand virtual sanctuary where former performers, creatives, and anyone navigating profound health struggles can still belong to a creative community.
Our mission
To ensure that nobody has to completely forfeit their passion, their creativity, or their people because of physical limitations. We don’t ask you to push your body; we meet you exactly where you are, even if that is in bed, in the dark, or in silence.
How we bridge the gap
We create spaces designed entirely around pacing, low energy, and zero-pressure connection. We keep you connected to the arts and community without demanding the physical toll:
- Somatic & Visual Creative Outlets: Engaging with dance and performing arts through low-energy mediums, such as choreography discussion, dance films, creative writing, or gentle, bed-based somatic movement that honours your energy limits.
- Low-Energy Creative Arts Hangouts: Asynchronous spaces and "bring your own craft" virtual socials where you can absorb the creative energy of others without the exhaustion of live video interactions.
- Space for Collective Healing & Grief: Validating the complex emotional journey of chronic illness. Through peer support groups, we talk openly about the loss of our physical practices while rediscovering new ways to identify as creatives.
- Studio & Sector Awareness: Working behind the scenes with the wider dance and performing arts sectors to build awareness around chronic illness, ensuring they understand the community they are losing and how to keep their doors metaphorically open to alumni who have become chronically ill.
Our Core Philosophy: You do not need to be actively dancing to still be a dancer. You do not need to be on a stage to be a performer. Your creative spirit belongs here, entirely on your own terms, with no physical justification required.
